Barrington Tops National Park, Australia
Last week at the beginning of our road trip from Sydney up to Brisbane, we headed in land to Barrington National Park. We came across these cabins on Air BnB, not really knowing what to expect other than ‘lots of birds’ and to bring all the food you will need as the nearest town is 45 minute drive away.
We picked up a few days worth of supplies and left Dungog, the closest town. As the number of houses got smaller and smaller, so too did our phone signal and shortly along the road we lost all reception. I can’t remember the last time I went anywhere where it was completely off-grid, there has always been a few bars of signal at a top of a field if needed, and with my work being so revolved around social media and constantly being ‘online’, I was really looking forward to fully switching off from technology.
Once ran as a ‘resort’, the twenty cabins have since been sold off privately. There are the remains of the old reception and a few derelict buses, as well as a tennis court which has been well maintained. We ended up having the place to ourselves and didn’t see anyone for 48 hours. The accommodation itself is fairly basic but comfortable. We spent the majority of the time sat outside on the verandah where we were greeted by a variety of birds from very friendly Rosellas and Australia King Parrots to Kookaburra’s and Brush Turkeys, as well as a nighttime visit from a cute possum.
Lots of great walks either from the cabin or a small drive away, including some good small waterfalls at Rocky Crossing.
